Wastes

Wastes (left produced by Kozilek, right by Ulamog)

Wastes is a typeless basic land introduced in Oath of the Gatewatch.[1][2] Wastes are associated with the blight left by the Eldrazi on Zendikar.

Description

Wastes cards feature only a colorless mana symbol in the text box,[3] despite having an Oracle text of “{T}: Add {C}.”[4][5]

Like any basic land, you can have any number of them in a Constructed deck. However for the Limited experience, R&D decided not to allow players to add any number of Wastes to their decks from a Land Station, but to limit players to what they open in their sealed pool or pick in a draft.[6]

Background

The concept of a colorless basic land is as old as Invasion. However despite being similar to the original concept of Barry's Land, the missing type puts Wastes in a different niche since it does not increase Domain.[7] Omitting the land type caused fewer problems than adding one.[8]

Wastes were spoiled early before the prerelease of Oath of the Gatewatch without Wizards' consent, together with Kozilek, the Great Distortion.

Cards referring to Wastes

Some cards refer to “lands named Wastes”:
