Penny Dreadful is a Magic Online-specific constructed format of Magic: The Gathering, in which any card that costs 0.02 tix, or less, is legal to use in your deck.

Description[ | ]

The range of cards worth 0.02 tix includes commons, uncommons, rares, and mythics, meaning a wide variety of cards are available. Around 14,000 cards are legal in the format. It is a constructed format, with decks of 60 cards with a 15 card sideboard, and a limit of 4 of each individual card (except basic land).[1]

One week after every new standard legal set release, the format "rotates"; that is, which cards cost 0.02 tix are checked again and the legal card list is updated. This creates an interesting dynamic; if decks become popular in Penny Dreadful and their prices rise because people are buying the cards for them, the decks will become illegal when the format rotates. This keeps the format fresh and interesting.

The format is named after a cheap popular serial literature produced during the nineteenth century in the United Kingdom.

History[ | ]

For the first fifteen seasons of this format, the legality cost was 0.01 tix. This was changed in March 2020 after the introduction of Pioneer, as the price of cheap cards began to rise.[2]

Banlist[ | ]

There is currently no banlist, and because of three-monthly rotation, Penny Dreadful is a "no bans" format.
