CAL (for Confinement-Assault-Loam) was the first major deck utilizing Life from the Loam as a card advantage engine. It became popular after Olivier Ruel placed in the Top 8 in the 2005 Grand Prix Beijing. With Life from the Loam which could also be accessed via Burning Wish and Onslaught Cycle Lands in addition to Dark Confidant massive Card Advantage could be generated as well as making it possible to still draw cards while protecting oneself under a Solitary Confinement and being able to keep the Confinement on the table. In the end enough red mana sources would be acquired to play a Seismic Assault and fueling it with Life from the Loam to win the game. This combination should lay basis for various other decks.
