The year 2009 was the seventeenth year of existence for Magic: The Gathering.

January 17	Grand Prix Los Angeles Start of the 2009 Pro Tour Season.
February 6	Release of Conflux. Five color focus. Return of Nicol Bolas to the storyline. First set to feature 6-card booster packs, available at mass-market retailers.
February 27 - March 1	Pro Tour Kyoto, Japan. Won by Template:Flagicon FRA Gabriel Nassif.
April 1	Announcement of From the Vault: Vaults April Fools.
April 10	Release of Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic.
April 30	Release of Alara Reborn. The first and only set "gold" set; consisting entirely of multicolored cards.
June 5-7	Pro Tour Honolulu, USA. Won by Template:Flagicon JPN Kazuya Mitamura.
June 17	Release of Duels of the Planeswalkers (2009). First in a series of digital Magic games, released by Wizards of the Coast.
July 17	Release of Magic 2010. First core set since Beta to feature new cards. First core set with planeswalkers and mythic rares. Biggest Rules changes since the Sixth Edition core set changes. In play zone renamed to the "battlefield" "Cast" reinstated as the verb used when referring to the act of playing spells or types of spells. "Remove from the game" changed to "exile". The "end of turn step" now called the "end step". Mana burn eliminated as a game concept. First set to feature a Booster box promo card.
August 28	Release of From the Vault: Exiled.
September 4	Release of Planechase. First supplemental set for multiplayer games.
August 27	Announcement of the Commander Theme Decks Enchantress Rubinia and Deathdancer Xira for Magic Online.
September 7	Release of Masters Edition III on Magic Online.
October 2	Release of Zendikar. The "land set"; centered around lands and players' interaction with lands. Boosters featured Priceless Treasures, randomly inserted Vintage legal cards from old print sheets.
October 16-18	Pro Tour Austin, USA. Won by Template:Flagicon USA Brian Kibler.
October 30	Release of Duel Decks: Garruk vs. Liliana.
November	First Magic Online Community Cup at the headquarters of Wizards of the Coast.
November 19-22	2009 Magic World Championships in Rome, Italy. Won by Template:Flagicon PRT André Coimbra. Team champions: Template:Flagicon CHN China.
November 20	Release of Premium Deck Series: Slivers. First of the short lived Premium Deck Series.
	Player of the Year: Template:Flagicon JPN Yuuya Watanabe.
	Rookie of the Year: Template:Flagicon DEU Lino Burgold.
