Infect is a combo deck for the Modern format.

Description[ | ]

It uses small and cheap creatures with Infect and powers them up with Blazing Shoal discarding a card like Reaper King or Progenitus to give the creature 11 power and win with a single swing due to Poison. To ensure a kill, it uses tutoring cards such as Plunge into Darkness or Spoils of the Vault, or to a lesser extent Summoner's Pact, as well as protection cards which are 0-1 mana in cost like Pact of Negation, Slaughter Pact, Gitaxian Probe and Inquisition of Kozilek.

The deck can kill as early as the second turn but is also risky to play as Spoils of the Vault can randomly kill the player on its own, and failure to successfully connect with the Shoaled creature will often result in game loss from failing to pay for a Pact card at the next upkeep. Slower variants, however, also exist.

Variations[ | ]

At Pro Tour Philadelphia 2011, Samuel Black piloted a version to a top 8 finish, that replaces the risky black tutoring with more consistent blue card-selectors as well as some cheap blue control effects, sacrificing speed for consistency.

Reception[ | ]

Due to the lethality of this deck, Blazing Shoal was banned from the Modern format.[1]
