Michael Whelan is a one-shot Magic: The Gathering artist. In 1994 he was commissioned by Dragon Con for a piece titled Dragon Watcher that would be featured on the Premium Event card Nalathni Dragon.[1]

Michael has always been interested in the imagery of science fiction and fantasy, and he believes that all his artwork is at its most fundamental level about creating a "sense of wonder". Since graduating from the Center College of Design in Los Angeles, Whelan has created hundreds of paintings for book covers, calendars, magazines, and record albums. His many commissions have included covers for Isaac Asimov's Foundation and Robot novels, Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series and the cover of Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell II: Back to Hell.[1]
