Gold is an artifact type introduced in Theros Beyond Death.[1]

Description[edit]

Gold can be sacrificed for mana. Unlike Treasure, these artifact tokens don't have to be tapped. This is especially useful when it comes to a mechanic like improvise where you can tap the gold tokens for a benefit and then sac them afterwards for mana.

Colorless artifact tokens "named Gold" had existed since Born of the Gods. The cards with this syntax were Gild, King Macar, the Gold-Cursed and Curse of Opulence. With the release of Theros Beyond Death, Gold became a predefined Token. As a consequence, the description of what a gold token does now appears in the reminder text, instead of in the rules text. The older Gold token cards were errataed.[2]

Rules[edit]

From the Comprehensive Rules (September 25, 2020—Zendikar Rising)

    • 111.10a A Treasure token is a colorless Treasure artifact token with “{T}, Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color.”
    • 111.10b A Food token is a colorless Food artifact token with “{2}, {T}, Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life.”
    • 111.10c A Gold token is a colorless Gold artifact token with “Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color.”
