Ryusaki Kumano (KOO-mah-noh)[1][2] was a powerful old yamabushi on Kamigawa.

History[ | ]

Kumano was born into a prestigious samurai family, the nephew of a powerful daimyo.[2] But the politicking of courtly life disgusted him. As a boy, he willfully neglected his kendo training, instead wandering among the merchants and villagers of Reito. His rich parents, more interested in keeping up appearances than in Kumano's welfare, let him do as he pleased.

Years passed and Kumano slowly changed from a daydreaming boy to a violent hooligan.[2] By twenty—four he was a drunkard and a criminal and had long since been disowned by his family. He scavenged around the outskirts of Reito, stealing scraps of food and sleeping in barns. Then one evening in 3207 AR, when Kumano had broken into an abandoned hut, he was paid a visit by a fire kami. The kami spoke to him, telling him to flee to Untaidake Peak before the veil was torn. Panicked and disoriented, Kumano stumbled out of the hut. He felt as though the fire kami was all around him, commanding him. He ran from Reito and began his addled journey toward the Sokenzan Range, toward the mountain peak Untaidake.

It was many delirious weeks before Kumano reached the mountains, and by then he was mad with hunger and fatigue.[2] Yet a strange clarity had come over him. He felt at home in this cold, rocky expanse, far away from the intrigues of his father's manor. It would be months before his meditations revealed to him that the kami had pushed him onto the shaman's path, to the way of a yamabushi. It would be years before he learned that Reito had been annihilated the day after he fled.

While atop his plateau, Kumano was visited by many kami seeking the secret that he supposedly knew: the reason for O-Kagachi's rage.[3] Kumano, however, did not have this knowledge. He would try to tell his visitors this to find out who had been telling them lies, but the kami did not believe him and responded with violence. After the yamabushi's fight with Kakkazan, Great Kami of the Mountain Fire, Kumano decided it was time to leave his plateau and find out who had been telling lies about what he knew. He vowed to the mountains that he would return with answers and a head hanging from his belt.

Kumano's name[ | ]

Kumano's name is given as "Ryusaki Kumano" in his story appearance, however, the Champions of Kamigawa glossary states that his first name is "Junzo."[1] Wizards of the Coast has not clarified the discrepancy.
