Duel Decks: Garruk vs. Liliana is the fourth set in the Duel Decks series. It was released on October 30, 2009, with an MSRP of US$19.99.[2][3] The decks were reprinted with new card frames in December 2014 for Duel Decks Anthology.

Garruk vs. Liliana contains two preconstructed theme decks, one centered around Garruk Wildspeaker and the other around Liliana Vess. Like Jace vs. Chandra, Garruk vs. Liliana depicts the rivalry of two planeswalkers and is a set of largely flavor-based theme decks.[4]

Garruk vs. Liliana features two cards with alternate art and holographic foil treatment; Garruk Wildspeaker and Liliana Vess. Furthermore, the set includes another four cards with alternate art; Blastoderm, Harmonize, Mutilate and Snuff Out.

Background[ | ]

Garruk vs. Liliana is loosely based on the webcomic The Hunter and the Veil,[5] in which Garruk attempts to stop Liliana from obtaining a dangerous artifact known as the Veil. Garruk summons beasts to fight for him, whist Liliana uses her necromantic powers, eventually obtaining the Veil and cursing Garruk with its powers before planeswalking away.[6][7]

The story was meant to continue in a planeswalker novel named The Curse of the Chain Veil; that was never published. A webcomic called The Veil's Curse, however, shows Garruk attacking Jace Beleren in an attempt to find Liliana ,[8] and Liliana deciding to use the Veil's power to kill some demons to whom she is indebted.[9][10][11]
