The bundle, previously known as the fat pack, is a special Magic product from WOTC, consisting of several of their products. The bundle is useful to both beginners and thorough collectors.

Fat packs were first introduced with Mercadian Masques. There has been a fat pack for every expansion and Core Set since. In may 2016, the fat packs were rechristened to 'bundles', connecting the name to the appropiate set. The first one to be released is the Kaladesh Bundle, the next one the Aether Revolt Bundle, and so forth.[1]

History

When the brand team first decided to make the Fat Pack, they had a meeting to brainstorm names. One of the joke suggestion was "Phat Pack", making fun of teenage slang at the time. A number of people at the meeting didn't get it was a joke and decided they liked it — just with a small spelling change.[2]

Fat packs originally had a MSRP of U.S. $24.95. They contained three booster packs, a tournament pack, two premium cards, a visual guide of the set and a novel. For small sets, the tournament pack was exchanged for three extra boosters.

Ninth Edition

Starting with Ninth Edition, fat packs were redesigned with a cardboard piece surrounding two boxes. This cardboard piece could be unglued from itself and inside was a panorama art-piece.[3] Six color-coded plastic card dividers were added to keep the cards separated in the card boxes. The two premium cards were removed and a 40-card land pack was added.[4]

Ravnica: City of Guilds

Starting with Ravnica: City of Guilds, the visual card encyclopedia in the back of the player's guide was changed from completely alphabetical to by color then alphabetical within each color.[5]

Shadowmoor

Starting with Shadowmoor, the fat pack was redesigned so that the panorama art-piece surrounded just one card box (disposable cardboard inserts allowed it to contain the contents, once the inserts and contents were removed the card box is the same size as previous card boxes). The art-piece is 2¼" smaller in unwrapped length. The color-coded card dividers were removed. The number of boosters increased from 6 to 8.

Shards of Alara

Starting with Shards of Alara, the fat pack's content was changed replacing the novel with a brief introduction of the expansion's respective novel or Planeswalker's Guide. The Pro Tour Player card was removed.[6]

Mirrodin Besieged

In the Mirrodin Besieged, the fat pack's content was changed removing the brief introduction of the expansion's respective novel. The amount of boosters increased from 8 to 9 and the land pack now contained 80 lands. Two deck boxes were added.

Innistrad and Dark Ascension

The first two sets of the Innistrad block exchanged 10 basic land for 10 checklist cards.

After the (temporary) demise of the core sets

In 2014 it was announced that concurrent with the Two-Block Paradigm, fat packs (as well as intro packs and Deck Builder's Toolkits) would be re-figured to accommodate starter level players.[7]

Kaladesh

With the release of Kaladesh Fat packs were given a facelift. Now considered to be too nondescript, the name was changed to "[set name] Bundle." The number of boosters increased from 9 to 10. The Bundle had an MSRP of $42.99.[1] The package adds two smaller boxes to store counters, tokens etc. Regular cards don't fit in these small boxes.

Contents

Below is a list of the fat packs and their variable contents. In addition to the listed contents, most fat packs contain a rules - or "Learn-to-Play" insert and all of them contain a player's guide with a complete visual encyclopedia of the set. Spindown life counters often come in five different colors.
