Box-topper cards are oversized Magic cards — approximately 4" x 6" (11 x 15cm). They are called "box-toppers" because they appear at the top of a sealed box of booster packs. Box toppers only appeared in booster boxes from 8th Edition and 9th Edition. They were also given away at special events, including E-3, Origins, Gen Con, and the San Diego Comic-Con. [1]

8th Edition[edit | edit source]

There are 33 different box toppers, each picturing a card in 8th Edition that had never before been reprinted in the Core Set. [2]. There were supposed to be 34 box toppers, but Giant Badger was axed at the last minute as there was no logo available because it didn't come from an expansion set. [3]

On the front is the card image as it appears in Eighth Edition. On the back is a blow-up of the art, plus the original expansion logo and date.

There are no rarity differences between the different box toppers; they are distributed in the displays equally. Six of them were used as give-aways at shows and conventions over the summer of 2003 (Avatar of Hope - Grand Prix Bangkok side events participation bonus, Lord of the Undead - Gen Con attendance bonus, Obliterate - World Championships participation bonus, Phyrexian Plaguelord - Comic Con attendance bonus, Savannah Lions - Origins attendance bonus, and Two-Headed Dragon - E3 attendance bonus).
