May 17–20	Magic Invitational in Los Angeles, California, USA. Won by Terry Soh. Hosted by Magic Online on the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
June 3	Release of Saviors of Kamigawa.
June 6	Announcement of the creation of the Magic Hall of Fame.
July 8–10	Pro Tour London. Won by Geoffrey Siron. Start of the Pro Players Club.
July 29	Release of Ninth Edition. First set printed in the Russian language. The last white-bordered set. Introduction of Auras. Introduction of reminder text for basic keywords like Flying. Redesign of fat packs.
October 7	Release of Ravnica: City of Guilds. Start of the Fourth Stage of Design. Introduction of the first bicolored Ravnican guilds: Boros, Dimir, Golgari and Selesnya. First broad use of watermarks. Introduction of hybrid mana. Introduction of Pro Tour Player Cards.
October 22	Starter 1999, Starter 2000, Portal, Portal Second Age and Portal Three Kingdoms become legal in Legacy and Vintage.
October 28–30	Pro Tour Los Angeles. Won by Antoine Ruel.
November 30 - December 4	2005 World Championships in Yokahama, Japan. Won by Katsuhiro Mori. Team champions: Japan.
