Robert Gutschera was a designer (1996-2008) and director of development (2005-2008) at Wizards of the Coast, mostly working outside of Magic.

Career[ | ]

He was a math major and went onto grad school at the University of Chicago. After he got his Ph.D., he taught at Wellesley College outside of Boston, where he was a junior faculty member. Through William Jockusch, a friend who'd once been in the math world himself, Robert learned of a job opening at Wizards of the Coast on the Research and Development team. His technical background ended up serving him well when it came to landing the position.[1]

In 2019-20 Gutschera worked on the action role-playing game Magic: Legends, a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast, Cryptic Studios and Perfect World.[2]
